PENDLETON, Ore. – Head coach
Sean McManamon celebrated his first collegiate victory as three different Oregon Tech players tallied goals in a convincing 3-0 victory over the University of Jamestown at Blue Mountain Community College.
The Owls (1-0-1) extended their school record unbeaten streak to 16 matches – getting a late first half goal from
DeShone Myles and added a pair of insurance strikes in the second half.
"Boys did a great job to persevere through adversity – with travel, switching locations, smoke, heat and a tough field," McManamon said. "The boys found a way to ground out a win. They were disciplined and executed the game plan well."
The match was to be played in La Grande, however, due to wildfire smoke, the teams moved 50 miles east – and played in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees.
Tech hit a post and a crossbar in the opening 30 minutes and the Jimmies (1-2) had a Jacob Holtz free kick clang off a post in the 13th minute – before the Owls broke through in the 43rd minute. Off a free kick, Miles rose up in the 6-yard-box and headed home the eventual game winner.
John Sarna added to the lead in the 53rd minute, making a 1-on-1 move before connecting a shot into the left corner of the net. After weathering a 10-minute flurry from the Jimmies, OIT extended the lead to 3-0 on an unassisted goal from
Andrew Pasang.
"We are happy with three points today, but we know we have more levels to us as we grow as a team," McManamon said.
OIT finished with a 15-11 edge in shots, with both teams attempting four corner kicks.
Joel Witts recorded his 18th career shutout – tying the Tech all-time school record.
Tech is off until Sept. 12 – when they host Menlo College.
