Â
HUGE WEEKEND SWEEP: A dominant weekend at home kept the Owls near the top of the Cascade Conference table – combining for 11 goals in the wins over Rocky Mountain and Providence. The 5-0 win over Rocky was the worst loss in RMC program history, with the 6-0 victory on Saturday the worst loss by a UP team. It was the second time in program history that Tech has recorded back-to-back games with 5-or-more goals scored – joining last season's wins over Linfield (5-0) and Simpson (6-0).
Â
FIVE GOALS EQUAL WINS: The 5-0 victory over Rocky and the 6-0 win over Providence marked the 20th and 21st games in program history scoring 5-or-more goals. The Owls improved to 21-0 all-time when scoring 5-or-more goals (including two wins that were vacated due to ineligible players).
Â
RIDEOUT CLOSING IN ON RECORD: Senior
Brock Rideout scored a goal and added an assist in Friday's win over Rocky – inching closer to OIT's all-time scoring record. Rideout has 18 goals and 47 points in his career – three goals and two points away from Trinidad Flores' school records established from 2015-18.
Â
PASANG IN SCORING MODE: The Owls leading scorer continued his quality season, as sophomore
Andrew Pasang posted a goal and an assist in both wins. Pasang, who has five goals and two assists this season – has recorded a goal or an assist in four-consecutive matches.
O'NEILL BRACES UP: For his second-straight match,
Cade O'Neill paced the OIT attack, logging his second-straight brace in the Providence win – the third of his career. O'Neill added his first assist of the season and ranks second on the squad with 11 points this season (5 goals, 1 assist).
Â
INTO THE SCORING COLUMN: Four OIT players recorded their first career goals – transfer
Rosendo Juarez-Flores, sophomore
Kevin Rodriguez and freshmen
Logan Miller and
Ben Bradshaw – with Miller adding his first two assists, with
Dylan Nakagawa adding his first helper.
Â
WITTS QUIETLY TIES RECORD: The Owls defense was outstanding in the weekend wins, with
Cooper Hunt,
Ryan Pearson and
Reilly Combs pacing the backs – limiting the scoring chances. Keeper
Joel Witts reaped the benefits – facing just 14 total shots and making six saves to earn two victories – his 21st and 22nd wins in an OIT uniform. The two clean sheets pushed Witts into a tie with former teammate Mitchell Jillson for the all-time shutout record, as the duo have each recorded 12 shutouts with the Owls.
Â
AROUND THE CCC: Warner Pacific (6-0) took over sole possession of first place in the CCC with a 1-0 victory over Corban (5-1). The Owls (4-1) sit a half-game back, with Southern Oregon, Rocky Mountain and College of Idaho a game back at 3-2. Along with SOU and OIT making the long journey to Walla Walla and Carroll, Corban and Bushnell travel to Evergreen and Northwest, Rocky and Providence head to C of I and Eastern Oregon, with Multnomah meeting WPU.
Â
TAKING THE LONG WAY: The Owls will take a round-about on the upcoming road swing – flying to Spokane, before making the 3-hour drive to Walla Walla. OIT will have a travel day Saturday to make the 8-hour trek to Helena before a Sunday match against Carroll, before driving back to Spokane to fly home.
Â
OPPONENT PREVIEW – WALLA WALLA: OIT opens the trip on the wide pitch at Walla Wall, meeting a Wolves (0-6, 0-5 CCC) team looking to snap a 15-game losing streak. WWU has been outscored 38-3 on the season and has mustered just eight total corner kicks in six matches. Pedro Reyes (2 goals) is the top playmaker, with Diego Molina (6.97 GAA, .616 save%) playing every minute this season in goal. It is the seventh meeting between the teams, with Tech 6-0 all-time (one win vacated due to an ineligible player), outscoring WWU 37-3.
Â
OPPONENT PREVIEW – CARROLL: The weekend ends in Montana's capital city, as the Owls look for their first-ever win at Carroll. The Fighting Saints (4-4-1, 3-3 CCC) picked up a huge road sweep last weekend, posting consecutive 2-1 victories at Evergreen and Northwest. The Helena squad is paced by All-CCC forward Rory Bloy (5 goals, 2 assists), along with midfielder Phillip Camacho (2 goals, 2 assists), with keeper Ryan Croft (1.48 GAA, .784 save%) handling the bulk of the time in net. Tech earned a 2-0 victory last season in Klamath, but the Saints hold a 3-2-1 series edge.
Â
RECORD BOOK: Five OIT players are among the Top-20 in the program's all-time record book following Saturday's contest. Both
John Sarna and
Brock Rideout are tied for the all-time game-winning goals record (7) – with Sarna No. 1 in total shots (135) and No. 3 in points (45), goals scored (16) and in assists (13), while Rideout is No. 2 in goals scored (18) and in points (44), ranking No. 7 in assists (11) and shots (102).
Joel Witts holds the all-time record for goalie wins (22) and shutouts (12); Cade O'Neil is No. 11 in points (29) and No. 12 in goals (11); with
Andrew Pasang No. 14 in assists (6), No. 20 in points (20) and just outside the Top-20 in goals (7).
Â
NEW OVERTIME RULES: The 2022 season will feature a new set of rules for games tied at the end of regulation. Beginning this year, any regular-season match that is tied after 90 minutes will be declared a draw – no overtime period will be played. All postseason games that are tied after 90 minutes will feature two 10-minute overtime periods – that will be played out in its entirety – regardless of how many goals are scored. If the postseason overtime period ends in a tie, a penalty shootout will determine the team that advances.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD: Tech returns to the Basin next weekend for home matches against College of Idaho (Oct. 14) and Eastern Oregon (Oct. 15).
