CALDWELL, Idaho -
Aerin Song led four Oregon Tech players in the top-6, as the Owls hold the day 1 lead at the Cascade Conference Women's Golf Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, at TimberStone Golf Course.
"Today was a very impressive showing by the ladies," said interim head coach
Justin Wiles. "In really nasty conditions they were as strong mentally as they have been all year. When the weather gets bad it ends up being more about mental strength than anything and that's where the ladies shined."
Song shot a front-nine 2-under-par 34 in a driving rainstorm, finishing the opening 18 holes at even-par 72 – one stroke clear of Lauren Hamm of Lewis Clark State.
OIT shot a first round 302, holding a 17-stroke lead over LCSC (319) on the 6,016-yard, par-72 track. Corban (334), Bushnell (342) and host College of Idaho (346) round out the top-5.
Payton Canon of OIT is alone in third at 3-over-par (75), with teammate
Maiya Baker tied for fourth at 5-over (77).
Ashley Zhu is in 6
th place with a 6-over 78.
Round 2 will begin tomorrow with 7:30 a.m. (Pacific) tee-times on hole 10, with the team champion earning an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
