Lincoln, Calif. –
Mitchel Swanson tripled and homered for the Owls but it wasn't enough as Oregon Tech (0-1) dropped its season opener 14-9 to William Jessup (1-0) in the season debut for both teams Saturday afternoon at McBean Stadium.
"We did a lot of good things today and showed that we are close to becoming the team we've been working hard to become," said head coach
Jacob Garsez. "The difference in the game was too many free passes to a good offensive team. I am confident our guys will respond with conviction tomorrow!"
The Owls took the early lead with one run in the top of the second inning as
Dalton Daily scored on an
Ian Peters' infield single.
The Warriors answered quickly with 3-runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a 2-run home run by Kevin Gutierrez followed two batters later by a solo shot from Mike Shoenberger.
The WJU added a run in the fourth, followed by two runs in the sixth, as they entered the seventh with a 6-2 lead.
In the seventh, Oregon Tech flipped the switch, sending nine runners to the plate, scoring five runs. The big play came on an RBI triple from Swanson, giving the Owls their last lead of the game at 7-6.
The Warriors added two runs in the seventh to take the lead back 8-7.
The Owls tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the eighth on a
Micah Jio double that scored
Kaleb Keelean.
William Jessup put the game away in the bottom of the inning with six runs on 3-hits, 3-walks, and an error. The big blast in the inning was a three run homer by Max Modeste that put the home team up 14-8.
Tech added a run in the 9
th on a Swanson solo blast to left center but fell 14-9.
Both teams had 11-hits in the game.
Jio led OIT with 3-hits, with Swanson and
Alex Malcolm adding 2-hits each in the loss.
The losing pitcher Saturday was
Brendan Talonen, who allowed seven runs (six earned) in his 1.1 innings of work. The Owls used four relievers after starter
Trask Telesmanich was pulled after two innings.
The two teams hit the diamond one more time tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm from McBean Stadium.
