Women’s Cross Country Adds Five

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech women's head cross country coach Jack Kegg announced today the signing of five student-athletes: Mackenzie Peterson (Klamath Falls, Ore), Julia Ketcham (Lakeview, Ore.), Kela Leamy (Corvallis, Ore.), Jade Hopkins (Central Point, Ore.) and Shannon McKinzie (Tulare, Calif.) to letters-of-intent to run for the Owls starting in the fall.

Head coach Jack Kegg stated on the new recruits, "This recruiting class of talented student-athletes doubles our women's cross country team to ten members and will cover a large range of distances during the track season from 800 to 10,000 meters. All of them are very strong students and have great potential as athletes. It will be very exciting to watch this team develop over the next eighteen months. The program's goal has been to be a consistent top ten team at the national meet and this class insures a very bright future for the Lady Owls!"

Peterson, from Henley High School, ran for Coach Brad Smith as she competed and placed at the OSAA Track & Field State Championships the past two years. She also played varsity basketball all four years of high school, was basketball team captain for two years, class of 2020 salutatorian, and Miss Oregon Teen USA 2019. She is the daughter of Russell and Theresa Peterson and plans to major in Biology Health Sciences.

Ketcham, from Lakeview High School, ran for Coach Bobbie Steninger. She has run the 1500 in a time of 5:05 and the 5K in 20:06. Julia is the daughter of Lizabeth and Chris Ketcham and plans to be a Cyber Security major at Oregon Tech with the goal of working on security systems for autonomous vehicles.

Leamy, from Crescent Valley High School, ran for Coach Tyler Bushnell. She is a transfer from Chico State University. She took 5^th place in the 3K at the OSAA 5A Track & Field State Championships and took 7^th place at the 5A Cross Country Championships. She was team captain for both track and XC teams the last two years, is a member of the National Honors Society, and the American Kennel Club. Kela is the daughter of Blake and Kim Leamy and plans to major in Civil Engineering.

Hopkins, from Crater High School, ran for Coach Justin Loftus of the Comets and has personal bests of 2:24 in the 800, and 19:23.3 in the 5K. She won the Principle Award with a 4.0 GPA, Leadership Award, and was named the 2019 Junior Female Runner of the Year. Jade is the daughter of Brad and Julia Hopkins and will be a Diagnostic Medical Sonography major.

McKinzie, from Tulare Western High School ran for Coaches Jordan and Arianna Perry. She was voted team captain in XC and track, leading her team to EYL Championships (2017-18, 18-19, and 19-20). Shannon is the daughter of Mike and Trish McKinzie and will major in Biological Health Sciences with a career goal of becoming a Specialized Physical Therapist.
