KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech (12-7, 6-3 CCC) edged out Corban University (12-7, 8-3 CCC) 63-60 on Saturday night at Danny Miles Court with the help of career-high scoring from sophomore
Kristin Farrell and a last-second basket from junior
Amanda Constant as the Owls outscored the Warriors 25-15 in the final stanza.
"What a great collegiate game that was tonight," said OIT head coach
Scott Meredith. "We found ourselves in another tight one, but tonight we made the plays we needed at both ends of the court. The Lady Owls showed what a resilient group they are. To come back from a 10-point deficit in the 4th quarter showed a lot of poise and desire. We finished some incredible shots and got defensive stops when we needed them most. I'm really happy for our girls to finish off a rather difficult week like this."
The game opened in favor of Corban, who started the game up four points. An 8-0 run from Tech gave them the lead, however, and from that point on the two teams – who are both receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Polls – battled for dominance.
Shawnie Spink kicked off a 9-1 run for the Warriors with a three-point basket that brought the team to the end of the first with a four-point advantage, 15-11. The Owls hustled into the second, scoring seven before Corban was allowed to strike back, but strike back they did – Jordan Woodvine scored nine as the team went 11-4 and reclaimed the lead.
The second half of the game was dominated by Farrell, who started up the third stanza with back-to-back baskets from long range. The Warriors interrupted with a 14-2 run to reach their largest lead of 10.
However, two more long range shots from Farrell boosted Tech 10-2 and put them within two points of the lead. A 10-4 run capped by Farrell's final three-pointer of the night sent the team over the edge, but with 40 seconds on the clock Corban University held a two-point advantage.
Two free throws from freshman
Makaila Napoleon tied things up at 60 and Constant scored a layup and added an and one to take a three-point lead. A final long-range shot from Spink fell just short and the Lady Owls took the game.
The Warriors were led by Woodvine, who scored a game-high 27 points and also made six rebounds and two steals. Kendra Murphy followed with nine points, 11 boards, and two steals, and Spink tallied five points and a team-high three assists.
Oregon Tech was led by Farrell's career-high 22 points as the sophomore made 5-of-9 from long range. Junior
Abby Kreiser earned another 12 points for the team and also added seven rebounds and six assists. Constant tallied another nine and Napoleon added seven as well as two of the team's three blocks.
Corban out-rebounded the Owls 44-38 and led 28-22 in the paint.
Tech led 18-9 from the bench and forced 23 turnovers over the course of the night, outscoring the Warriors 22-15 off turnovers.
The Lady Owls will be back in action next weekend as they travel to La Grande, Oregon to take on Eastern Oregon on Friday and Caldwell, Idaho to take on College of Idaho on Saturday, with both games taking place at 5:30 pm. However, tomorrow afternoon Lady Owl alumni will return to play a free-to-the-public alumni game at 12:00 pm.
The Owls will return home on the weekend of the 31
st, taking on Northwest University on January 31
st and Evergreen State on February 1
st for the 11
th annual Pink Out.
