Hustlin’ Owls Fall to Warriors

LEWISTON, Idaho. – Lewis-Clark State (14-10-1, 6-6 NAIA-W) took down Oregon Tech (6-23, 2-12 NAIA-W) in both games of NAIA-West play on Saturday at Harris Field, sweeping the first doubleheader of the weekend with an 11-2 margin in the first game and a smaller 4-2 lead in the second.

Game 1 Lewis-Clark State 11 Oregon Tech 2

The day started off with a big win for the Warriors, as Dalton Duarte landed a homer with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to give them a 4-0 lead that the Owls were not able to overcome.

LCSC expanded the lead through the fifth inning, earning runs in the second on a balk and third on a Kyle Callahan homer before reaching their final score in the fifth with four singles.

Tech pitchers struggled to hold off Lewis-Clark State's offense, making 11 errors in the game and only striking out three Warriors.

OIT held LCSC without a run for the next four innings but were unable to catch up as they were held to only two runs, with Josh Kallstrom and Austin Zavala each batting in a run in the seventh.

Zavala and Xzavian Gonzales each notched three hits in the loss, with Kallstrom adding two.

Game 2 Lewis-Clark State 4 Oregon Tech 2

The second game was closer for Oregon Tech, as pitcher Josh Davis struck out 10 in a defensive effort that kept the Warriors to a single run in the first four innings.

Alex Malcolm batted in a run with a double in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 1-1. However, Lewis-Clark retaliated in the bottom of the inning as Zach Needham batted in a run of his own to take the game to 2-1.

Kody Garvin upped the lead to 3-1 with a single in the sixth before Emmett Covello scored Zavala with a double in the seventh to cut it to 3-2. This was the closest they would get, as a Callahan homer in the eighth locked in the final score.

Micah Jio, Gonzales, Zavala, Covello, Tristan Shea, and Malcolm each notched a single hit in the course of the game.

The Hustlin' Owls will remain in Lewiston, Idaho this weekend to play Lewis-Clark State College in another doubleheader on Sunday, with games at 10:00am and 1:00pm, before travelling to Salem on Wednesday to take on Willamette University, starting at 12:00pm.
